About
Founded in 1791, the University of Vermont (UVM) is the fifth oldest university in New England, and it was the first US school with no religious affiliation. It enrolls more than 11,000 undergraduate and 1,400 graduate students, but less than 25% of students are from Vermont. UVM is regularly ranked as one of the “greenest” schools in America. While it is an R1 research institution, it is also known for its student activism, emphasis on social justice, and leadership on LGBTQ+ issues in higher education.
Along with New Hampshire and Maine, Vermont is consistently ranked as one of the least churched and least religious states in the nation, and UVM’s culture and student body reflect the spiritual climate of New England. Chi Alpha staff are first and foremost missionaries to the campus, and the emphasis of our ministry is the consistent engagement of unchurched and religiously unaffiliated students with the Gospel. In addition to a spiritually diverse undergraduate community, we lead international and graduate student ministries, and we regularly participate in interfaith programming with the campus’s Muslim student community.
